The beginning of civilization is closely related to the period when
warring tribes started settling down in one place and took to agriculture
for food, slowly moving away from hunting. This transition from warring
groups to peaceful coexistence of various tribes, redefined leadership,
competition and performance based on equity. Similarly, though management
function was practiced even during those times, industrialization
formalized the management function only after World War-II.
We come across various practices of governance during the mythological
period of ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Mahabharata’, Chanakya’s teaching on politics
and Akbar the Great’s style of functioning activating knowledge amongst
his ministers. Body of knowledge / skill as practiced in those days was
refined and evolved as a science only in the late 1960s. Management
knowledge so acquired was formalized under the wider umbrella of
International Organization For Standardization (ISO) as various systems,
developed from the customer’s perspective for the benefit of entire
corporate world cutting across international boundaries, language barriers
and various styles. It is with this background that the corporate world
has realized the importance of implementation of systems in their working
environment, as bare minimum standard, a paradigm move towards business
excellence.
Sahara India Pariwar is on its way to adopt such international standards
for its various businesses. For example Amby Valley has got ISO 14001,
OHSAS 18001 and SA 8000 certification; Sahara States Township at Lucknow,
Hyderabad, Bhopal, Sahara Grace (Gurgaon) has got ISO 9001.
Air Sahara has taken a major step by deciding to go for systems
certification (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS and SA 8000) in an integrated
way. This emerged from the need to streamline operations using a process
management approach, so that every function can be put on autopilot mode.
This whole activity is being undertaken as a movement rather than a
project, which may span across five to seven years. This integrated
management system is also called ‘Air Sahara Sustainability Business
Management Model,’ an operationalized definition of Sustainability’
We will also start a series on ‘Customer Delight through Quality’ in the
forthcoming issues of SEED covering the journey of management as a
subject. The series will cover the emergence of Quality and graduating to
Business Excellence, which will be relished by every reader interested in
the evolution of this subject.
This is just a beginning.
