Says Shri
Gandhi, "It has been a long and tough period of study, but all the effort
has been worthwhile. This period of living and studying in Sweden and
braving the extreme winter of the country has been an experience in
itself."
Further,
speaking on his international experiences, Shri Ashim Gandhi explained
that, "It’s a totally different world, the awareness in European countries
and specially the Scandinavian countries on environment is tremendous,
issues such as waste handling, including its segregation and disposal,
forestation, energy conservation, water management etc. are worth
benchmarking."
There are
regulations at the federal level to ensure that the products at the end of
their life are handled and treated properly. Law mandates these
initiatives of handling of waste such as tyres, batteries, vehicles,
electrical and electronics equipment waste and plastics waste. Extended
Producers Responsibility (EPR) is one such principle wherein the principal
producers play a key role in managing the waste.
Various
European countries have their own regulations which vary with the internal
policy of each country, for example, each country may have different
targets of collection, sorting and reuse of waste.
Now with
the formation of European Union (EU) wherein most of the European
countries are members, a unified policy for handling most of the products
is being formulated by the European commission and parliament.
Which means
that a non-EU country doing business with any European Union country will
have to abide and respect the EU laws. This ensures a uniform policy at
the entire EU level, thus ensuring the compliance of the environmental
concerns at the EU level.
Now,
besides handling his routine assignments at the corporate level, Shri
Ashim Gandhi, as an immediate initiative said, "I am writing a paper on
Socio-Environmental issues while developing and analysing performance
indicators based on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines for Aamby Valley City. This research paper would be a good
document for Aamby Valley City and would make way for further research in times to
come."
We are glad
to have you back and we look forward to your expertise and inputs on
international environmental concerns from time to time.
